What is CS GAS?
CS (chlorobenzaimalononitrile)
This is a white crystalline powder
with a minimum purity of 96%. It is used primarily in aerosol form,
but maybe used in a powder form. CS is not stable in aqueous
solutions, however, two modified forms of CS exist: CS1 which is a
miconized form stable in aqueous solutions, and CS2 which is
miconized and coated with water repellant material. CS2 is an
extremely light form of powder from which secondary aerosol effects
are to be expected. CS2 is very persistent and may remain active for
weeks on dry ground. CS is the most common agent used in the
Canadian Forces.
The onset of incapacitation is
immediate if liquid formulations of CS contact the eyes. The onset
of incapacitation from aerosol exposure depends on concentration. At
high concentration, incapacitation may not occur until 60 seconds.
The effects last from about five to 20 minutes, depending on dosage.
During this time, affected individuals are incapable of effective
action.
CN
(Tear Gas) (Chloroacetophenone).
This gas formerly used in the CF has
been replaced on grounds of safety. Tests have shown that CN
solutions, even when used as directed, my cause temporary, but
unacceptably long lasting damage to the eyes.
